New Design for MS Research Charity

We are proud to announce the launching of a new design for the website. It is using a free template from D. Carter who gives away some of his designs. The work is provided free by the webmaster who has been a volunteer for many years. At the same time, things are changing at the MS Research and Resources Unit and a new volunteer is writing a newsletter which will give no doubt some details about the Project on Fatigue started last month...

Badminton Marathon over 27 Hours

All but one team ( Michael Pepper, Ian Wingfield, David Philips and David Lindop on the right) eventually had to drop out through injury or shear exhaustion but one intrepid team managed to continue until 12.30 on Sunday 3rd June 2007 despite aching legs and drooping eyelids–a grand total of 27 hours 30 min! This was indeed long enough to challenge the Guinness Book of Records entry for a similar event standing at 24 hours, 21 minutes and 19 seconds, held by Sylvia Campion, Aubrey Cox, Maureen Dunne and William Stevenson, of Ireland , set in December 2005. It remains to be seen whether or not their record attempt will be ratified by the appropriate authorities. Watch this space!!

World Record Attempt for MS Research!

We are delighted to announce that Andrew Heygate-Browne, President of the University of the West of England ’s (UWE) SU Badminton Club and his team, are going for a World Record attempt on 2nd and 3rd June 2007, and…raising funds for MS Research!

The current world record for the longest badminton doubles is 24 hours, 21 minutes and 19 seconds, held by Sylvia Campion, Aubrey Cox, Maureen Dunne and William Stevenson, of Ireland, set in December 2005.

The attempt is taking place at UWE’s recently opened Centre for Sports, Frenchay Campus, Coldharbour Lane , Bristol . If you can help at the event, please let us know! I’m sure you’ll join us in wishing them the very best of luck!

The Reebok Bristol Half Marathon 2006 - Sunday 17 September 9:30am, starts from Bristol City Centre. Organised by Bristol City Council, the Reebok Bristol Half Marathon is one of the UK’s leading road races, awarded Gold Grade status by BARR in recognition of the highest standards of organisation. In response to the huge demand for places in 2005, the course has been revised to increase the capacity to 15,000 entries. The race is now one of the biggest half marathons in the country, and with title sponsors Reebok on board for a further two years, the race is set to develop still further.

MS Research Training and Education charity has 10 places for committed runners that can help fundraise a lot for MS Research. Please contact Shaun McCarthy for securing one of these places. He will let you have more information on the charity for your sponsors and a fundraising pack.

It will give you a good start so you can get down to finding sponsors. Now that the New Year resolutions and the wish to exercise and do something healthy and out of doors are sending young and older people searching for something to do. Vacancies for Volunteers to help MS Research Charity

There are two types of jobs for volunteers to apply to in order to help MS Research charity in 2006.

First, three vacancies:

Assist head of unit with organisation, categorisation and data entry for a
wide range of MS information sources, answering phone.

Skills required: Good telephone manner, IT skills: competence with Microsoft software an advantage. Good organiser. Some biological/healthcare knowledge useful.

This is at Bristol General Hospital

Then, no limit of vacancies:

Occasional assistance with collections, fundraising walks rides and other events, advertising and general duties.

Enjoy working in a team. Tactful in dealing with general public. Aware of basic health and safety issues. Willing occasionally to “dress up” or otherwise generally attract attention an advantage!

Tandem Skydiving for MS Research Postponed

After a long and cold wait at Cirencester Airfield on Sunday morning, Tom and James were given the unfortunate news that their skydive would have to wait, due to weather conditions. Whilst disappointed, as they’re so keen, hopefully they won’t have to wait too long as the plan is to go ahead next Sunday. Good Luck!

Both Tom and James work for Carpet Giant in Yate, North Bristol and both live in Gloucester . At present they don’t know the total amount raised, as they want to keep raising funds after the jump, but we do know it will be in excess of £1,000!

If you are interested in sponsoring them, even at this late stage, please call Lyn, or, if you, or anyone you know, would like to do a skydive to raise funds in this exciting and once in a lifetime way, you can!

You can either visit Skyline or call us and we can send you the details. It doesn’t matter where you live, they have 20 centres around the country.

Flop Idol Event for MS Research Charity

On Friday 25 Nov from 7pm, at Creda/Jackson factory, Station Road, Yate, will be held a Flop Idol event. It is an opportunity for all wanabee singers to have a go at a fund-raising karaoke night. They seem to like singing in Yate which is in North Bristol, good for them. There is a free entry and it should be fun for all. It will be held in aid of the charity MS Research.

Tandem Skydiving for MS Research

On Sunday 27th November 2005 after 8:30AM, at Cirencester Airfield in Glouscestershire, James and Tom will be carrying out a tandem jump, and have been busy gaining sponsorship for the event, which started with the 'Flop Idol' a Kareoke event in order to get funding for tuition and be ready to gain sponsorship.

James and Tom work for a company called Carpet Giant, based at Yate, in North Bristol!

It is going to be very cold, I hope that the weather conditions permit this generous way of raising funds for MS Research.

MS Research Has New Logo!

Great news! MS Research showing the full name of the charity: MS Research Training and Education has been posted on their website. It will be shown around Bristol during fund raising events as well as street collections, research information meetings and training sessions. Well done for all the volunteers who have worked hard to communicate and work together; leaving the researchers carry on with what they do best: research MS to help those who live with the disease Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Generous Donation to Help MS Research

It was a great surprise to see the form recently created on our server arrive completed in the webmaster's in-box!
It arrived later in the routine of the day, after lunch and snooze. This second seating in front of the monitor may not happen before 6PM. It all depends on the level of distractions.
But that day, it was early in the afternoon. Luckily, someone else was in the house with me, I was overcome with joy and needed a hot drink and a shoulder rub. It is not surprising after 29 years of MS, Multiple Sclerosis is exaggerating my emotions. I like to keep a quiet life.
I planned the form but I was very surprised by what the form user had said: a Bristol couple related to a PwMS was getting married and had decided to ask their friends and relatives to give to MS Research instead of flowers and presents. And to top that, they offered to help organize events and with collections. What a modern way of volunteering, a trend setting way I hope. Congratulations to the happy generous couple!

Provision of information:
I have searched the internet regularly from 1994 for the MS unit. I find abstracts of articles to edit and now send them more than twice a month. It is easier nowadays to find news on the latest findings about MS research.

MSfirst website:

This is a website that is for all people to find information in the region. I have tried to make it accessible to most browsers. When I found out about the MS Research Unit site at Bristol University, I thought it had useful information that not many PwMS (MSers), including local ones or professionals would find easily. I managed to make the unit known in the whole world judging by the visitors we had. Locally, the information regarding MS was very confused so we had to state our position .
There is still a page called PwMS help MS First that explains a bit more about why I wrote the first site. I hope it will help find
volunteers.

There is a form on the charity website to use if you would like to help us. It is possible to help from any part of the United Kingdom. The charity is based in Bristol but the help and training of professionals will benefit the whole MS community in the country!

MS Research Charity in Bristol

Multiple Sclerosis Research Training and Education-(working title MS Research)- is a new Bristol based charity dedicated to helping people with MS through its research and specialist treatment activities. The unique feature of this organisation is that it will strive to establish integrated MS research and treatment centres and communities involving those who have MS, those who treat it and those who research the condition. Local expertise and experience will maximise the value of research and hasten new treatments.

The Charity’s key aims are:

To support research and specialist treatments that will overcome the disabling and debilitating problems associated with MS.

To seek research and other opportunities that will bring us nearer to a cure.

To contribute to excellence in health and social care delivery through professional training programmes.

To directly assist those affected by MS to manage the symptoms and maximize ability and capability through programmes of treatment and education.

To work collaboratively with organisations with likeminded aims (charities, private and public healthcare sectors, funding bodies, and educational agencies) to contribute to improving the quality of life for people who have MS and those who share their lives.
